SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS.** Electrical Fire Risks in Older Houses - A 4 Part Seriesby Brian Cook (FSR), President of PowerCheck Targeted to electricians, this is a series of in-depth sessions on the electrical systems, examination procedures, and common electrical safety hazards found in older houses. Electrical concerns, findings and solutions will be presented to help electricians correctly diagnose issues and bring older homes to a more acceptable level of electrical safety. Session 1: March 19, 1 pm to 3 pm"A Walk Through of Electrical Fire Risks in Older Houses" Learn about: a typical older house electrical safety survey changes in house electrical systems from the 1920s to the 1970s electrical fire concerns typically found in older houses diagnostic tests that can determine the integrity of an old home electrical system Session 2: March 21, 1 pm to 3 pm"Knob and Tube" Learn about: the history of open electric wiring ("knob and tube") from 1910 to 1964 various types of "knob and tube" wiring attributes, concerns, diagnostic methods and solutions Session 3: March 26, 1 pm to 3 pm"The Aluminum Years" Learn about: houses built between 1965 to 1975, known as "The Aluminum Years" common findings and concerns with aluminum wiring diagnostic methods and solutions Session 4: March 28, 1pm to 3 pm"Recommended actions to bring older homes up to modern standards" Learn about: upgrading older services, panels, bonding, system grounding and the wiring of devices ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection smoke alarms and compliance with the 2005 National building code the importance of a comprehensive electrical safety check and general maintenance About the Guest Speaker. Brian Cook is an experienced licensed electrical contractor specializing in home electrical systems and is a Field Safety Representative (FSR), class B, issued by Technical Safety BC. He has a background in engineering and is the President of PowerCheck, providing electrical risk evaluation of older homes throughout BC. Through a comprehensive analysis of the electrical system, PowerCheck provides an opportunity to easily understand the electrical safety of the home. If hazards are identified, they are clearly laid out in a report so that an independent electrical contractor will know exactly what actions to take to bring a house to an acceptable level of safety. Each session is approximately a 2 hour presentation, refreshments will be served before the session.
