Gibbons, PHD on "Advances in Mental Health Measurement" Blum-Riese Professor of Biostatistics and Director, Center for Health Statistics, University of Chicago Professor, Departments of Medicine and Public Health Sciences EVENT/SCHEDULE: Health Services Research Lecture at Regenstrief Institute, Inc. 1:00-2:00pm Presentation by Dr. Gibbons 2:00-3:00pm Open Networking Session Mental health measurement has been based primarily on subjective judgment and classical test theory. Impairment is determined by a total score, requiring that all respondents be administered the same items. An alternative is adaptive testing in which different individuals may receive different scale items that are targeted to their specific impairment level. Adaptive tests based on multidimensional item response theory have already been developed for depression, anxiety, mania, substance abuse, and suicidality. The shift in paradigm is from small, fixed-lenth tests with questionable psychometric properties to large item banks from which an optimal small subset of items is adaptively drawn for each individual, targeted to their level of impairment. Results to date reveal remarkable increases in precision of measurement and dramatic decreases in patient burden. Applications in the following will be discussed: emergency departments primary care centers community settings child welfare systems college mental health screening judicial systems epidemiologic research Dr. Gibbons has received lifetime achievement awards from the American Statistical Association, the American Public Health Association, and Harvard University. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and National Academy of Sciences.
