AAJA-LA Film Series presents HBO's APA Visionaries Short Film Competition Winners: "June," "Jie Jie," "Remittance" AAJA-LA kicks off our Summer Film Series with an evening celebrating emerging APA filmmakers. In partnership with HBO, we're screening the three winning films from HBO's 2018 APA Visionaries Short Film Competition. The AAJA-LA Summer Film Series seeks to bridge the journalism and entertainment communities as well as spotlight films and filmmakers of color. The event series is meant to connect communities and inspire conversation. "JUNE" (1st Place) - Director: Huay-Bing Law - Set on an American college campus during the 1960s, “June” chronicles the experience of a young Chinese woman as she attends her husband’s graduation. "JIEJIE" (2nd Place) - Director: Feng-I Fiona Roan - “Jiejie” is a portrait of two young sisters being raised by a single immigrant mother in Los Angeles in 1997. "REMITTANCE" (3rd Place) - Director: Maritte Go - Inspired by her immigrant family’s experiences, “Remittance” tells the story of a Filipino cruise worker who receives a call informing her that her son is in the hospital. HBO Asian Pacific American Visionaries is a short film competition sponsored by HBO that provides emerging directors of Asian and/or Pacific Islander descent the opportunity to showcase their work. Judged by a panel of HBO executives, industry leaders, and fellow APA filmmakers, the competition seeks to identify cinematic storytellers who offer unique perspectives of the Asian Pacific American experience. The theme for the 2018 APA Visionaries Short Film Competition centers around the concept of "home." Films should explore the meaning of "home" in a creative and innovative way. Launched in 2016, APA Visionaries was created to help further the dialogue about race, diversity and representation in Hollywood while also identifying new cinematic storytellers who offer unique perspectives of the Asian Pacific American experience. A Q&A with filmmakers Huay-Bing Law and Maritte Go will follow. We will be discussing independent filmmaking and the emergence of the APA voice in independent film.
