On July 21st from 10 am-2 pm we will host our 3rd "YOU" Matter Youth Rally. This event was brought about in 2016 because of the shootings across the nations and people started rallying around these events. During summer camp, my youth asked me why no one asked them how they feel. The community rallied around the youth to demonstrate that their voice matters and in July of 2016, 14 non-profits for youth set up vendor tables and eight police officers; four from Ft. Lauderdale Police Department, two from Lauderhill, and two from Lauderdale Lakes appeared on stage and had open dialogue with 14 teens that were brave enough to have those conversations. This event had over 400 people in attendance. However, the event was specifically geared to empower youth and adults were not permitted to participate in the dialogue. Last year, July 2017, the agencies participating expanded to include the Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue, the Children Services Council of Broward County, and Value My Vision. The officers who participated last year were on stage during the panel discussions with 13 students and over 250 people in attendance. The Rally included a short 100 youth march from Carter Park in observance to stopping the territorial gang violence within our communities with our youth. While the Rally’s main event is the panel discussions with the police officers, this year, the youth are looking to expand the event. It will be hosted at YMCA L.A. Lee Family Center facility for access to rooms for workshops dealing with Teen Leadership, Student Government, Civic Engagement, Entrepreneurship, Social Media, and add a workshop that allows ex-felons to speak motivationally to youth from lessons learned. Every year, the event is youth-lead. Our young people are empowered to be engaged in community activism and engaging their peers to express their voices so they can be heard and make the difference our communities need.
