We would like to invite you to participate in the McCormick School of Engineering annual Order of the Engineer ceremony. With principles akin to the Canadian Ritual of the Calling of the Engineer (Iron Ring), the Order calls upon individuals to take an Obligation to themselves and their profession. You, as well as your parents and friends who are engineers, are invited to join in taking the Obligation. Somewhat analogous to the Hippocratic Oath taken by physicians, there is only one name on the certificate - the individual’s. The Order of the Engineer was founded in 1970 to promote professionalism among engineers and it currently has over 100,000 members nationwide participating in 240 Links, most of which are on university campuses. Unlike many other organizations there is no long-term obligation to anything other than the profession of engineering. Members attend only the Ring Ceremony and pay a one-time nominal fee of $40 to cover the cost of registration, a stainless steel ring, certificate, and maintenance of a national registry. Members will receive a stainless steel ring during the ceremony, which is to be worn on the little finger of your writing hand. The ring symbolizes the continuity of the profession and its methods and serves as a constant reminder of the fallibility of an engineer and the consequence of errors. In the Canadian ritual the ring, which is made of iron, is said to be forged from the wreckage of an engineering disaster. The ring ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 21, at 2:00 p.m. in the Ryan Family Auditorium located on the first floor of the Technological Institute just off the main lobby. If you wish to join the Order of the Engineer you must fill out the google doc and pay the $40 fee by May 21, 2018. Please note that although the word "ticket" does appear on this site, this is a reference to the initiation fee, no physical ticket is needed for this event. Your friends and family are welcome to attend. We hope you will be able to participate in this engineering school tradition. Please note that you will receive a separate email regarding ring sizing.
