See Science with Your Ears! Using music synthesis software, we can listen to scientific data just as easily as we can look at charts and graphs. By immersing ourselves in sound, we can appreciate the mysteries of science in new ways. Can we understand our place in the universe by listening to music created from outer space data? Can we learn about hurricanes by making music based on how storms spin, grow and move? Hear from music technology professor Mark Ballora and experience science in a new way—by listening to it. Stargazing on the flight deck will follow the presentation (weather permitting). Family Astronomy Night will be primarily standing room only because of reduced seating capacity. Registration does not guarantee a seat. 7:00pm: Doors open 7:30pm: Presentation 8:15pm–10:00pm: Stargazing and pop-up planetarium shows ABOUT THE SPEAKER Mark Ballora is professor of music technology at Penn State University, where he teaches courses in music technology, history of electroacoustic music, musical acoustics and software programming for musicians. Early work includes sound designs and electroacoustic scores for modern dance, theater, animated films and radio dramas. He has also written articles describing uses of sonification (rendering scientific datasets with sound) in the areas of cardiology and computer network security. His sonifications of astronomical and physiological datasets have been used by percussionist and ethnomusicologist Mickey Hart as part of performances by the Mickey Hart Band. In June 2017, he was co-recipient of two interdisciplinary seed grants awarded by the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative and the Gulf Research Program. These grants involve working with marine biologists to create sonifications of ocean-related data.
