This presentation and discussion will trace the development of the Designer/Manufacturer movement based in Brooklyn, New York; its roots, evolution, and explosive growth from 2010 to 2018. In Brooklyn, what began as loose collectives of young, mutually supportive, independent designers that integrated design and manufacturing, sharing space, and resources eventually found favor with design press and critics, helping transform a borough into a brand. Reflecting the cultural diversity of the borough, burgeoning design communities in Brooklyn have diversified a large segment of the American design identity. Design in Brooklyn has driven cultural change, from institutions such as NYCXDesign and Brooklyn Designs to development and rezoning initiatives such as Industry City and The Brooklyn Fashion and Design Accelerator. Introductions by: Daniel Michalik: Assistant Professor of Product + Industrial Design, Director of BFA Product Design, Parsons Chad Phillips: Creative Director and Director of Retail, Brooklyn Museum Introductory presentations will be followed by brief presentations by speakers from product design, fashion, and community development, unpacking strategies of design entrepreneurship, social justice, local manufacturing, etc. A panel discussion will conclude this event.
