Service Workers: A Gentle Introduction

Service Workers provide the technical foundation for rich offline experiences, periodic background syncs, push notifications and more. They take the form of a JavaScript file that runs separately from the main browser thread, that can control the website that it is associated with, intercepting and modifying network requests, and caching resources in a granular fashion.

Join us for a primer on Service Workers, how they work, and how to write them, not only on the client but also on the edge with Cloudflare Workers, which lets you write JavaScript Service Workers that run directly in Cloudflare's 117 edge locations around the world.

Talk 1: Progressive Web Apps and Service Workers

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) take performance and reliability to the next level. They work offline, intelligently cache assets, work on wide variety of devices and screen sizes, and in general, provide a really awesome user experience. PWAs are the future of web applications.

What goes into building a PWA? How do Service Workers work? In this talk, we'll build a Progressive Web App from start to finish.

About the Speaker:

John Fawcett is an engineer (and internal TypeScript advocate) at Cloudflare. Currently, he's working on the UI for Cloudflare Workers. In his free time, he's writing JavaScript.

Talk 2: JavaScript on the edge: A Service Worker story

Learn how to use Cloudflare Workers to modify your site's requests and responses with JavaScript. Leverage our 120+ data centers to instantly deploy custom logic without having to touch your origin.

Imagine if you could write bits of logic for your website or service and deploy it globally with your favorite web technology: JavaScript! You can do this today with Cloudflare Workers. The Workers platform is based on the Service Workers spec and lets you generate responses from the edge, perform A/B testing, rewrite requests and more. We'll demo some interesting use cases for server-less scripting.

About the Speaker:

Preston Pham is a Web Engineer at Cloudflare building new services and APIs for making the web a better, safer place. Previously, Preston worked at IBM, hacking on cloud services.
