No doubt execution is key to strategic success, but there are obstacles to strategy execution that demand a leader’s time and attention. It is clear that most leaders are not finding success in navigating execution roadblocks. Therefore, strategies are failing to drive significant growth of profitability and impact. Consider the following statistics on execution: The Conference Board’s recent Survey of CEOs revealed that chief executives are so concerned about strategy execution that they rated it as both their number one and number two most challenging issues. According to Harvard Business School professor Robert Kaplan, 90% of strategies fail due to poor execution. Based on a Harvard Business Review database, employees at three out of every five companies rated their organization weak at execution A Bain Consulting study notes that seven out of eight companies in a global sample of 1,854 large corporations failed to achieve profitable growth, though more than 90% had detailed strategic plans with much higher target Nearly four out of five strategic implementations fail. It’s not the fault of the strategies themselves. It is that they do not get executed by the people within the organization. The people on your team aren’t lazy or incompetent; they’re busy.
