The PPS Wind Energy Educator Workshop is a FREE full-day professional development workshop presented by CE in partnership with KidWind and IRCO Asian Family Center, through the PGE Renewable Development Fund and is intended for out of school time educators serving PK-12 PPS students. This inquiry-based, hands-on science and engineering training program offers a review of the science, technology, and classroom applications of wind energy and other renewables applicable for all grade bands.   Hands-on workshop activities provide a chance to run through inquiry-based classroom tasks/experiments with other teachers in preparation for adaptation in your classroom. Each participating teacher will receive a KidWind Advanced Wind Experiment Kit and hands on curriculum to cover 8-10 sessions. FAQ: What topics will be covered during this training? The topics covered will include: the fundamentals of science and engineering of wind energy and share ideas and lessons about wind energy concepts including: energy transformations, electrical generator components, and electrical generating turbines. Agenda 8:30-8:45 Welcome and Introductions 8:45-10:15 ACTIVITY MacGyver Wind Challenge Using materials you could find in a dollar store, teachers will build basic weightlifting wind devices from scratch. We will jump right in to experimenting with concepts on simple machines, energy transformations, potential & kinetic energy. We will also discuss how to incorporate the activity with students in their classrooms. 10:15 –10:45 ACTIVITY How does electricity work? Basic Electrical Generator Components We will have a basic demonstration of how electricity is generated using magnets and copper wire using a Simple Generator. Teachers will understand the basic concepts governing their electrical generating wind turbines. 10:45-11:15 - LUNCH BREAK - Jon gives Wind 101 11:15 –12:15 ACTIVITY Construct Electrical Generating Turbines and Collect Data Teachers will experiment with their electrical generating wind turbines. Teachers will design blade sets for their turbine and will test the turbines with the LabQuest data collector. Teachers will understand how to use their full kit and what the challenge will entail for their students. What are my transportation/parking options getting to the event? CE allows for the transfer of tickets, however, please let us know the name and email address of the participant, as we will need to gather some preliminary data to help inform our workshop! Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? No. We will have a registration table set up where you will sign in. Is this training free for teachers/educators? Yes, this is a fully funded training opportunity for PPS teachers/educators. This workshop is sponsored by the Bonneville Environmental Foundation with funding from the PGE Renewable Development Fund. Is lunch provided? Yes. Please let us know any dietary restrictions! Will I receive any classroom materials/equipment? Yes! Teachers who attend this workshop will gain access to science kits aligned with the hands-on activities covered in the workshop.  What will the science kits include?
