First FCSM/WSS Workshop on Transparent Reporting on the Quality of Integrated Data The Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology (FCSM) and the Washington Statistical Society (WSS) are sponsoring a series of workshops about transparent reporting on the quality of data produced through the integration of multiple data sources. As government agencies, academia and the private sector develop new approaches to maximizing the information available from the ever growing body of existing data, integrated data are becoming more common. Many of the prospective sources include data developed originally for administrative or commercial work, rather than for statistical work as such. Integrated data provide tremendous opportunities to learn more from data than evaluation of single data sets in isolation. They also pose a large number of challenges. Several of these challenges revolve around transparently documenting: 1) the quality of the input data sources; 2)how the input data were processed into an integrated data set and how the integrated data are structured; and 3) how to convey information about the quality of the resulting output data and information drawn from those data. These challenges are compounded to the extent that the input data may be in formats that federal agencies and the statistical community are less familiar with in terms of quality metrics, and analyses of the integrated data may require analytic decisions guided by fewer well accepted standards than agencies have typically followed. A draft agenda for the first workshop is: Opening Session 9:30-10:20 9:30-9:45 – “Introduction to FCSM/WSS Workshops on the Quality of Integrated Data 9:45-10:00 – “Introduction of Speakers and Overview of the Input Workshop” 10:00-10:20 – “Advancing the Paradigm of Combining Data Sources – Considerations from the National Academy of Sciences” Session I 10:30-12:10 Reporting on quality of administrative data. 10:30-10:55 – “Quality of Administrative Records as Source Data” 10:55-11:20 – “Quality Considerations for Administrative Data Used for the Producer Price Index (PPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) development” 11:20-11:45 – “Assessment of Commercial Store and Household Scanner Data: Methods, Content, and Cautions” 11:45-12:10 – “The Cost of Health Care: How to Evaluate Quality of Data in the Health Record Environment” 12:10-1:15 Lunch Break (on your own) Session II 1:15-2:55 Reporting on quality of less structured data. 1:15-1:40 – “Evaluating Quality of Medical Imagery in Blended Health Data” 1:40-2:05 – “Data Quality of Satellite Imagery for Studying Complex Systems” 2:05-2:30 – “Sensing Data Quality in Sensor-Based Data” 2:30-2:55 – “Web-scraped Data, Consideration of Quality Issues for Federal Statistics Session III 3:15-4:15 Structured discussion Speakers and the working group will engage with audience about their questions regarding integration of data collected specifically for statistical purposes (statistical or structured data) with administrative data (also often highly structured but for different applications than statistics), semi-structured data such as data from web-scraping processes, and unstructured data such as photos or satellite images for the production of official statistics.
