SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Chris UrmsonFormer Director of Google’s Self-Driving Car ProjectCo-Founder & CEO, Aurora Innovation There are few people who've played a bigger role in shaping the autonomous vehicles revolution than Chris Urmson, who for eight years was CTO and then director of Google’s Self-Driving Car Project, before stepping down last year and co-founding startup Aurora Innovation. Described by Fortune as “The Secretive Startup From the Best Minds in Self-Driving Cars,” Urmson’s co-founders at Aurora include Sterling Anderson, who directed Tesla’s Autopilot program, and Drew Bagnell, Uber’s former head of perception and computer vision. Aurora is developing a full-stack solution for self-driving cars — everything but the cars themselves. Urmson is a former assistant professor and researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, where he received his PhD in Robotics. At Carnegie Mellon, he served as director of technology for the team that won the 2007 DARPA Urban Grand Challenge driverless car competition. Heidi KingDeputy Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration In her capacity as Deputy Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Heidi King has been serving as Acting Administrator for NHTSA, the lead federal regulator for self-driving cars. In September, NHTSA released new federal guidance for self-driving cars, Automated Driving Systems (ADS): A Vision for Safety 2.0 (nhtsa.gov/av). An economist and research scientist by training, before being appointed Deputy Administrator and Acting Administrator of NHTSA, Ms. King served in a broad range of roles in the public and private sectors. She served in the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) from 1998 to 2000 and from 2007 to 2011, and spent 2 years as Chief Economist on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Having worked as Senior Manager of Management Science at Pfizer Inc. from 2002 to 2006, and as Global Director of Environmental Risk at General Electric (GE) from 2013 to 2016, she is also well-versed in the private sector. Ms. King is a graduate of Caltech and the University of California, Irvine. Randy Iwasaki, P.E.Executive Director, Contra Costa Transportation Authority / GoMentum Station Randy is the chief executive of the Contra Costa Transportation Authority, whose GoMentum Station self-driving car testing ground has been designated by USDOT as one of ten autonomous vehicle proving grounds in the nation. Used by automakers such as Toyota, Honda, and Mercedes-Benz, GoMentum Station in Concord, California, is the nation’s largest secure testing facility for autonomous and connected vehicle technology. Prior to joining the Authority, he was appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger in August 2009 as Director of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). Randy was with Caltrans for more than 26 years. Los Angeles Councilmember Mike Bonin Chair, Los Angeles City Council Transportation Committee Los Angeles Councilman Mike Bonin is the Chair of the Los Angeles City Council’s Transportation Committee. He also serves on the Board of Metro (LACMTA), one of the key agencies involved in LA's Coalition for Transportation Technology (the LA working group preparing for autonomous vehicles). Representing parts of Los Angeles where the LA tech community is concentrated, Mike Bonin is known for not only his leadership on transportation issues, but also his tech-savvy approach. His district includes includes Venice, Playa Vista, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, West LA/Sawtelle, Mar Vista, Del Rey, Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, Westchester and Ladera. As councilmember, Mike has been a champion of neighborhoods, a force for smart, responsive government, and a progressive voice for social justice. A former newspaper reporter, Mike graduated from Harvard University in 1989 with a B.A. in United States History. Bran FerrenCo-Founder, Chief Creative Officer, Applied Minds Visionary creative technologist Bran Ferren is Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Applied Minds. His 2014 TED Talk on self-driving cars has a million views and has been translated into 24 languages. Named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company, Ferren is is an expert on leveraging curiosity and creativity to inspire innovation, and is the former President of R&D for Walt Disney Imagineering.
