We are pleased announce the minisymposium “Current state of Transcranial Electrical Stimulation: progress & challenges” at Tisch NYU Langone Health (550 First Avenue, Smilow Seminar room) on Tuesday, November 12th, from 8am - 2:30pm. Transcranial electrical stimulation has widespread clinical and research applications, yet behavioral effects in humans are often weak and difficult to replicate. Experiments using this technique differ widely in stimulation and experimental parameters, contributing to these diverse outcomes. However, we argue that a lack of basic mechanistic understanding of how externally applied electrical fields affect neural activity is a primary contributor to outcome variability. This meeting intends to bring together researchers aiming to understand the mechanisms of action of transcranial electrical stimulation in full brains and hippocampal slices, primates and humans, and ex vivo and in vivo. A range of potential mechanisms will be proposed, discussed, and evaluated. The diverse views and insights from different fields are expected to provide best practice recommendations that can guide clinicians and scientists interested in developing the next generation of transcranial electrical stimulation experiments.
