After a brief orientation at Ken Patrick Visitor Center to Drake’s Beach’s colorful maritime exploration history, marine ecology, and fossil geology, we’ll begin a leisurely exploration of a mile or two of broad, wind-sheltered beach at the base of dramatic white cliffs. Ocean currents and winter storms often bring beachcombing treasures both natural and human-made to these sands, so we’ll look for curiosities that can connect us to fascinating stories (leaving, of course, anything we find aside from trash for others to discover). We’ll also keep our eyes peeled for whale fossils eroding from the cliffs while Frank’s spotting scope will allow close-up viewing (without disturbance) of the hauled-out elephant seals, shorebirds, and other wildlife we’ll likely encounter. Instructed by Frank Binney -This will be a vigorous activity. -Youth, ages 12 and up, are welcome with adult supervision. -If you have any special circumstances or questions, please contact us at [email protected].
