At the mercy of ocean currents, micro and macroscopic plankton play a mighty role in the ocean food web, act as a carbon sink and supplier of oxygen. Did you know the ocean off the California Coast is one of the top 4 biodiverse regions in the world? Come find out why and what role plankton plays in this incredible ocean ecosystem off the Point Reyes coast that earned protections as Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries. Participants will learn about different types of plankton and their adaptations for survival, their role in the food web, and changes in ocean health that impact plankton and the marine food web. After we make our own plankton nets, we’ll head out to a local field site to collect plankton samples, then return to the Red Barn to observe our catch under the power of microscopes. Games, experiments, and hands-on projects make this class a fun way to learn about life in our neighboring ocean. Class Schedule: 9:00 am Welcome and Introduction to Plankton at the Red Barn Slideshow Mero-plankton match-up activity Adaptations- Build your own plankton and races 10:20 am Build your own plankton net 11:00 am Drive to sampling site -- either Inverness Yacht Club or somewhere on east shore of TB 11:45 pm Lunch at Yacht Club or other 12:30 Drive back to Red Barn with samples 12:45 Observe plankton under scopes, two with projectors onto laptop and/or overhead screen 1:45 Ocean Food Web activity Table stations: Ocean Acidification and Plastic pollution, draw plankton, plankton printmaking (tentative) 3:00 Wrap-up 3:30 Leave, clean up Instructed by Leslie Adler-Ivanbrook and Jennifer Stock -Youth, ages 12 and up, are welcome with adult supervision. Class Cancelation Policy: If a registered participant wishes to cancel their enrollment and receive a refund, notification must be received at least 14 days in advance of the class date. No refunds will be issued for enrollment cancelations made less than 14 days in advance of the class date. Class enrollment fees are non-transferable. In the event that the PRNSA Field Institute cancels a class, participants will receive a full refund of class fee.
