How does industry find and prepare work-ready graduates? by Larry G. Martin U.S industry is facing unprecedented global competition from international growing economies and is challenged to find qualified candidates. How does this phenomenon manifest itself in the work place? How does it show up in accounting and financial reports? What are the specific solutions industry uses to correct these challenges? Larry Martin will describe the challenges of industry hiring working and how organizations have adapted to meet their needs. He will provide case stories describing how challenges manifest in the work place and accounting and financial reporting. He will provide specific solutions and takeaways. Larry Martin will also describe programs led by U.S. industry to train and place workers and professionals, such as Oregon Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program (MECOP). Larry Martin recently retired from Allegheny Technologies Corp as Business Development Director for the Defense market covering domestic and international commercial activities over a broad base of applications. During Mr. Martin’s long tenure, he has seen the difficulty of locating and hiring work ready engineers and technical staff into an ever more competitive environment. He was twice Program Chair of the Multiple Engineering Co-Op Program (MECOP) involving over 50 companies throughout Oregon and SW Washington in partnership with three colleges and universities placing over 200 selected Junior and Senior engineering students per year into course-relevant internships. Thus, he has unique insight into industry’s demand compared to the supply of qualified entry level candidates. Speaker #2: Is Excel manipulating you or are you manipulating your data? by Art Fletcher & Russ Snead, Filius Bonacci How many FTE’s are being misused by Excel jockeying? Could these same efforts be spent analyzing your company’s information? Since FTE’s are very precious, utilization of staff time could be used in diagnosing issues, completing the budgeting process, or creating new reports. Especially in today’s world with the exponential growth of data, using advances in technology allows everyone to work with data in a more efficient manner. How can you manage data? How can you work with data? How can you communicate data? We will provide tips on understanding how to manage your data, work with that data, and at end of the day, effectively communicate the data. PhDs are earned in each one of these categories. We will present and discuss strategies to answer the three questions shown above and will illustrate how each are dependent on and interactive with each other.
