Our next Science Café is scheduled for Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Tradewinds Restaurant at Duran Golf Club. Our guest is Dr. Daniel Batcheldor, Department Head for the Department of Physics & Space Science at Florida Institute of Technology. His talk is entitled "Water in Space": As humanity begins to expand its physical presence beyond the moon, the need to understand in situ resources becomes fundamentally important. This is because it is impractical, or impossible, to resupply crews that are on deep-space extended missions. However, the resources we need, particularly water, are found in abundance throughout our solar system. Water is present in asteroids, comets, Mars, and the moon itself. It is therefore no surprise that there are an increasing number of missions designed to directly study these objects in detail. One NASA mission—OSIRIS-REx—began its journey to the asteroid Bennu on September 8th, 2016. OSIRIS-REx plans to return a sample from Bennu by 2023 for analysis on Earth. But our plans for extending a human presence beyond our home planet also include establishing a permanent colony on Mars. While this may sound like science fiction, it is in fact a tangible goal using technologies that are within our reach. In this Science-Cafe, Batcheldor will discuss the importance of missions like OSIRIS-REx and Florida Tech’s work with the Buzz Aldrin Space Institute to move our species to Mars. The presentation will begin at 6 p.m., but feel free to arrive around 5:30 for dinner and drinks. A buffet is available for $12 plus tax. Please remember that Tradewinds does not charge an event fee to host Science Café, so purchasing dinner or a beverage helps us continue this great partnership. Moving forward, we are asking everyone who RSVPs to indicate whether they will be eating to ensure an appropriate amount of food is available and none goes to waste.
